Cardiff Information
|
On
the coast of the estuary of the river
Severn
and lying at the centre of three smaller river systems (the Taff,
the Ely and the Rhymney) in the County of Glamorgan,
Cardiff
has been in existence since first being settled by
the Romans who, in 55A.D, built a military fort on
the site of what is now Cardiff Castle. |
Cardiff became a city in 1905 and was designated the
capital of Wales in 1955.
Today,
Cardiff has a population of over 320,000 and
attracts more than 11 million visitors a year.
With the £1.8 billion development of Cardiff Bay and
the £102 million development of the Wales Millenium
Centre, Cardiff has been recognised as being one of
the top five most favoured travel and business
destinations in the UK.
The
completion of The Wales Millenium Stadium,
hosting
amongst other events the
Six Nations, the FA Cup and
the
Wales Rally GB, along with the development of a
£700 million sports village, featuring a snow dome
and Olympic size pool and events such as the Ryder
Cup in 2010,
means that worldwide attention on Cardiff is set to
increase still further.
Coupled
with a new £315 million shopping development i
n the
city centre and the justifiably famous civic centre in Cathays Park (covering
approx. 60 acres)
Cardiff is one of the most progressive and sought
after destinations in Europe today.
